Comparing this to September 2010 there were 2 sales with an average list price of $1,068,000, average and median sales price of $1,042,625 and an average 31 days on the market.  The large difference in the average and median sales price from last year to this year was due to the sale of a $1,745,250 East Rock home.

One of the most desirable and prestigious areas to live in New Haven is in the neighborhood of East Rock.  This upscale neighborhood gets its name from nearby East Rock a New Haven landmark known for its summit overlooking the city with spectacular panoramic views of New Haven and Long Island Sound.

 
The neighborhood of East Rock lies within three historic districts with the southerly parts of neighborhood listed in the Upper State Street Historic District and the Orange Street Historic District.  The western half lies within the Whitney Avenue Historic District.

East Rock-Worthington Hooker School New Haven Connecticut

Worthington Hooker School serves students in the neighborhood of East Rock in two separate buildings.  The elementary school is for grades K-2 and the middle school is for grades 3-8.

Named after Dr. Worthington Hooker a former professor and physician at yale University the original school built in 1900 is located at 180 Canner Street and is now home to students kingergarten through grade 2.  When it was not large enough to accomodate all nine grades, students in grades 3-8 were moved into the former Saint Stanislaus School on State Street. 

After the completion of an 18 month renovation project on the main building in the spring of 2007 at a cost of $12.9 milliion plans were also underway to build a new building for the middle school students.  The new school located at 691 Whitney Avenue officially opened in December 2009 for grades 3-8 at a cost of 36.5 million. 

The majority of the student body of Worthington Hooker School is made up of children of Yale professors and graduate students.  It is New Haven's most culturally diverse school and reported as the highest achieving school of the City of New Haven's K-8 public schools.

As a contributing property in the Whitney Avenue Historic District, the elementary school on 180 Canner Street is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

A favorite outdoor recreation destination and tourist spot for residents and visitors of the Greater New Haven area is East Rock which spans the towns of New Haven and Hamden.

The magnificent red basalt cliffs of East Rock were formed about 200 million years ago and at its highest point of 366 feet offers spectacular views of the City of New Haven, Mill River, Quinnipiac River, Long Island Sound and Long Island.

East Rock is the principal feature located within the 425 acre East Rock Park owned by the City Of New Haven and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.   The city manages the park and maintains a scenic seasonal, winding road where you can drive your automobile to the summit and is also accesible by foot or bicycle too.

Angel of Peace

At the top of the summit of East Rock is the Angel of Peace overlooking the City of New Haven hand raised with an olive branch and holding a wreath as an enduring symbol of hope, peace and harmony. 

The angel sits atop the Soldiers and Sailors' Monument in honor of the residents of New Haven who gave their lives in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War and the Civil War.

Construction began on the monument on June 17, 1886 with its first dedication ceremonyheld one year later on June 17, 1887. It is estimated that approximately 175,000 people lined the streets of New Haven to watch a parade of  20,000 march up to the summit. and included men, women, children and a number of miitary divisions.

There was live music, fireworks and speeches.  Guests of honor at the ceremony were two heroes of the Civil War General Phillip Henry Sheridan and General William Tecumseh Sherman.  It has been rededicated twice in Septmeber 1987 and October 2010 after undergoing extensive restoration to its interior and exterior and is currently under rehabilitation today.

People who visit East Rock Park are permitted to hike, bike, picnic, bird watching, walk their dogs and go snowshoeing or cross-country skiing during the winter.   There are playgrounds, tennis courts, basketball courts, baseball, football and soccer fields located at the base of East Rock making it a wonderful destination for outdoor recreation.
