For Your Service and Your Sacrifice We Honor You Today and Always
My heart as we look upon this Memorial Day is heavy and filled with sorrow. On a day when we honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, the recent death of a member of our Connecticut National Guard has added a greater poignancy to the true meaning of today.
Staff Sgt. Edwin Rivera, 28 of Waterford CT who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom died on Tuesday from injuries he sustained in a firefight in Laghman Province Afghanistan on May 20th. He was a member of the 1st Battalion 102nd Infantry Regiment based in New Haven and was deployed to Afghanistan late last year.
There are no words to express the pain in my heart and soul to his wife, two young children and his parents at the loss of a husband, father and only son.
I may not know Staff Sgt. Rivera but he was a brother of my brother who is currently serving in Afghanistan with the 1st Battalion 102nd Infantry Regiment.
Flags have been ordered by Governor Jodi Rell to be flown at half staff until sundown on the day of Staff Sgt. Rivera's funeral and our state now sadly must add another hero to its roll of honor.
Please honor and celebrate all of our brave young soldiers today who like Staff Sergeant Rivera have made the ultimate sacrifice for our nation and remember the debt of honor we owe them. Keep close to your heart today every member of our Armed Forces as we reflect on the liberty and freedom we enjoy this Memorial Day.
"He which hath no stomach to this fight let him depart. But we in it shall be remembered. We few, we happy few, we band of brothers!! For he today, that sheds his blood with me, shall always be my brother”. Rest in peace my Brothers, you have not been forgotten. - (William Shakespeare)
